SPEAKERS / Captain Keith Burchell

Chairman of the SATS General Botha Old Boys Association Bursary Fund Executive Director – Burport Marine Consultancy Africa (Pty) Ltd (BMC Africa).

Capt Burchell has 55 years’ experience in the maritime industry and is a registered IMO marine consultant. He established his own Marine Consultancy in 2004 after he retired from Transnet, as a Director of Subsidiary Marine Data Solutions, following 34 years of Service.

Capt Burchell has key consultancy experience in port operations and training as a senior consultant, working on various large port and strategic projects in West, East and South African ports. He has served as specialist consultant on lighthouse services, radio navigation planning, vessel traffic management & information systems; tug operations, pilotage and port management & operations.

Capt Burchell has been Chairman of the S.A.T.S General Botha OBA Bursary Fund since its inception in 2011 and is passionate about the development of young seafarers for the maritime sector in South Africa. He has always been interested and involved in maritime education and training. During his Transnet career he assisted with the establishment of training programmes in all the positions he occupied, He was responsible for the Portnet Cadet Program for eight years. He is also a member of the Maritime Training Board. He was also involved in his private capacity as Chairman of the Training Committee of the NSRI in his days as a board member.

Capt Burchell believes that the key to the development of new talent for the Marine Industry is mentoring. This has been proven by the SATS GBOBA Bursary fund which openly states that its critical success factors are its mentoring and outreach programmes.
